Often called “The first lady of song” and “Lady Ella”, Ella Fitzgerald set milestones in music, as well as in American culture. She broke barriers during a time when segregation was strict and rife. Her talent and voice allowed her to be at the top of the charts for half a century. Ella Fitzgerald was the first black woman to win a Grammy, wining 13 Grammys during her career. She produced more than 200 albums, and sold more than 40 million albums worldwide.
Ella was awarded the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) Equal Justice Award and the American Black Achievement Award.
